In Episode 2 of the Vocaburger Podcast, Lucas and Mia teach you how to order food politely in English.
1. Vocabulary Glossary:
Menu – the list of food and drinks in a restaurant. Example: Can I see the menu, please? Waiter – the person who serves food. Example: The waiter brings our food. Order – the food or drink you ask for. Example: I order pasta and salad. Drink – something you can sip (water, juice, tea). Example: My favourite drink is lemonade. Bill – the paper that shows what you have to pay. Example: The waiter brings the bill to the table. Contactless Payment(bonus) – paying by tapping a card or phone on a machine. Example: I pay by contactless when I buy coffee.
2. Grammar Tip:
Present Simple for Ordering Use polite phrases: I want… → I want a salad. I’d like… → I’d like some tea. Can I have…? → Can I have a sandwich, please? Avoid direct/rude language like “Give me…” in restaurants. Use “please” to sound polite.
In many English-speaking countries, polite language is very important in restaurants. “Please” and “thank you” are expected. Contactless payment is common and quick, but still say “thank you” after paying.
